The Old City
I enter the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. I know what to expect, because it´s not for the first time. Nevertheless, a negative fascination seizes me again. I feel repulsed by the people who slip through the area howling and praying on their knees and at the same time, I can´t avert my gaze. I´m part of the gaffing mass and I feel like a spanner. On the one hand unwell, on the other hand, I soak up the atmosphere with all my senses: The religious lunatics, the smell of incense in the air, the warmth of the candles, the darkness, the splendour, the control of the stream of visitors with a strict hand. Here the saying „faith puts mountains“ get´s clear to me in all its meaning. I´d rather leave the mountain where it has always been.

Are religions the cause of all wars?
What if all religions were banned? Would that be the source of new disputes? Or are only the hardliners for the troublemakers? How can religious people be made to live in tolerance? Everyone must be allowed to believe what they want. Why do many strong-believer grants this right only to themselves and not to others? How do you steer religious madness in a sensible direction and who should take it on? |

Drive to the Dead Sea
The guide. He gets on the bus and I think: This man seems likeable to me. He speaks English insignificantly better than I do and he seems to run a lot, looking wiry and trained. Also he seems to have humour. Perfect for this job, because it needs detailed knowledge, you can't find in any travel guide. He takes us to a place forbidden to enter, but very interesting, which normally would have been hidden to us. Yet the image of him I had in my head changes abruptly as he uses us as a

medium for a political statement: Group photo with a protest slogan against the terrorist attack on the Pittsburgh synagogue, including an Israeli flag. I watch him, then I leave the photo immediately, on whatever channel. My sympathy vanished like a candle in the rain. For murdered Arabs, he wouldn't have initiated that. I don't want to hit out to any side. Murder is always despicable.
